Dubai, a dynamic global metropolis with a history that’s both rich and complex. During the time of the Sumerians, one of the earliest known civilizations in the historical region of southern Mesopotamia, Dubai was a source for metallic goods, including copper and bronze.

The Venetian pearl merchant Gasparo Balbi visited the area in 1580 and referenced Dubai for its pearling industry, which continued until the 1930s. Then throughout the 1960s, it became the centre of a lively gold trade, which continues today. This history and the traditions of the Middle East continue to influence tastes in interior design, and today’s Emiratis are fully embracing the international culture. With that in mind, here are six must-haves for any stylish pied-à-Terre dining room fusing middle eastern tradition with modernity.

Girih Treasure Chest

An exquisite piece by Linley that explores Islamic pattern through detailed wooden marquetry in brilliant sapphire blue and rich gold tones. At the centre of the design lies an eight-point star, taken from a beautiful mosaic tile pattern. The inside features gold and white gold leaf to replicate the exterior geometric pattern. H 175cm, W 67cm, D 43cm. £90,000.

Moon gold leaf dining table

A magnificent round dining table by Davidson finished in sycamore dusk and lightly distressed hand-gilded 24ct moon gold leaf. The delightfully warm and shimmering tones combine to create a magical dining experience. H 75cm, D 200cm. £22,250.

Loveboat ceiling light

Originally designed for a private yacht, this stunning ceiling light in a delicate amber hue by Wired Custom Lighting is hand cast with polished resin that mimics the Venetian technique of piastra glass. Finished in antique bronze with a high gloss resin, it’s perfect for hanging above the dining table. H 100cm, D 90cm. £8,550.

Monumental bronze and brass screen

A great screen that is handcrafted using painstaking techniques by Milan-based Gianluca Pacchioni. It features unique bas-relief elements formed from leaves and plants which give the appearance of them floating in a bath of gold mud. H 300cm x W 200cm x D 9cm. 100,000 Euros.

Elegant dining chair

A classic armchair with a beautiful scrolled back finished in hand tinted sycamore and available in a range of other luxury finishes, by Davidson. This fully upholstered chair provides wonderful comfort with soft curves and elegant black lacquer toes. H 100cm, W 60cm, D 66cm. £1,800 excluding fabric.

Gold plated jug

The crafting of relief surfacing to hollowware has always required the most difficult of techniques in the silversmith’s art. The smooth protruding elements, which capture the light are hand-worked with a technique that requires a complete mastery of the material. Crafted to designs by Otto Prutscher by Wiener Silber Manufactur. H 25cm. Photo by Craig Dillon. POA.
